Master of Professional Studies (MPS)

MPS Overview

The Master of Professional Studies in CEDEV is a 30 credit program consisting of 10 courses offered entirely online. As a CEDEV student, you will learn theory and its practical application to real life opportunities and challenges faced by communities around the globe.

The curriculum is designed to give you skills to:

  • identify and enhance economic development planning

  • recognize community needs and opportunities

  • assess communities and regions and make recommendations for change

  • understand the structures and facilitate the processes of communities and community organizations

Coursework in the MPS in Community and Economic Development will immediately apply to your job, elected office, or volunteer activities making the communities you care about stronger, more sustainable and better places to live and work.

Curriculum

The following courses are required for the MPS in CEDEV.

  • CEDEV 430 Principles of Economic Development Planning

  • CEDEV 452 Rural Organization

  • CEDEV 500 Principles of Community and Economic Development and Leadership

  • CEDEV 505 Leadership Development

  • CEDEV 509 Population, Land Use and Municipal Finance

  • CEDEV 575 Methods and Techniques for Community and Economic Development

  • STAT 500 Applied Statistics or comparable statistics course

Electives (3-6 credits)
CEDEV 576  Applications and Practices for Community and Economic Development (Summer Institute)
*Other electives may be selected to fit student interests, with approval of the program.

Paper/Project or Internship (3-6 credits)
If you aren’t ready to make the commitment to a master’s degree, consider our Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Community and Economic Development.  This 15-credit online certificate is ideal for those seeking new careers and for seasoned, mid-level professionals who want to build on existing knowledge and proficiencies. The five courses in the certificate can be applied to the master of professional studies.
