Required Courses (21 credits)

CEDEV 430 PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLANNING (3). Concepts, strategies, and techniques of local economic analysis, planning, and development; case studies and decision‑making exercises.

CEDEV 452 RURAL ORGANIZATION (3). Social organization and change in rural communities; use of sociological principles in analysis of rural problems and rural development.

CEDEV 500  COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP (3).  Understanding principles and strategies of community and economic development in relation to general systems theory, community decision making, and leadership strategies and roles in group and community settings.

CEDEV 505 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (3). Exploration, understanding, and application of leadership roles, strategies, and principles in group and community settings.

CEDEV 509 POPULATION, LAND USE AND MUNICIPAL FINANCE (3). Theories and methods for understanding population characteristics and municipal finance, and the interplay of population, land use and municipal finance and taxation.

CEDEV 575 METHODS AND TECHNIQUES FOR COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (3). Understanding and applying methods and hands-on experience with techniques used in community and economic development.

STAT 500 APPLIED STATISTICS (3). Descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, power, estimation, confidence intervals, regression, one- and 2-way ANOVA, Chi-square tests, diagnostics. Prerequisite: one undergraduate course in statistics. 

Or an equivalent statistics course.

For the integrative experience, students would take the most appropriate course below.

CEDEV 595 INTERNSHIP. Supervised off-campus, nongroup instruction, including field experiences, practicums or internships.  Written and oral critique of activity required. A specific title may be used in each instance and will be entered on the student’s transcript. Prerequisite: prior approval of proposed assignment by instructor.

CEDEV 596 INDIVIDUAL STUDIES OR SPECIAL PROJECTS (3-6).  Used by students to work with an advisor on their final paper or project, or to study special topics not covered in other courses.

CEDEV 599  FOREIGN STUDIES (1-2 per semester, maximum of 4). Courses offered in foreign countries by individual or group instruction. A specific title may be used in each instance and will be entered on the student’s transcript.

CEDEV 576 APPLICATIONS AND PRACTICES FOR COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (3). Consideration of community and economic development applications in communities and practices of public and private organizations and agencies. Summer Institute.

CAS 404 CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND NEGOTIATION  (3). Theories and strategies important for conceptualizing, developing, and managing conflict negotiation, mediation, and third-party intervention. Prerequisite: CAS 100 

CAS 452 ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION THEORY AND RESEARCH (3). Explores the nature and functions of communication in organizations; emphasis on concepts, tools, and skills for effective management of communication. Prerequisite: CAS 202 or CAS 252

MANGT 510 PROJECT MANAGEMENT (3). A problem-based and interdisciplinary course in project management skills and techniques needed to manage projects in a modern business environment. Prerequisite: graduate standing

MANGT 520 PLANNING AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (3). A problem-based course that addresses techniques for planning the project development process, including securing resources and resource management.

PL SC 420 POLICY MAKING AND EVALUATION (3). Advanced analysis of public policy, emphasizing policy evaluation and the factors that determine policy success and failure. Prerequisite: PL SC 001 or PL SC 002

PSYCH 485 LEADERSHIP IN WORK SETTINGS ( 3) Effective Date: SP2007 Review of research and application of behavior principles in the areas of management and supervision. Prerequisite: PSYCH 100 , PSYCH 281 or 3 credits MGMT

SOC 404 SOCIAL INFLUENCE AND SMALL GROUPS (3). The study of social influence, leadership and status, and social cohesion and commitment processes in small groups. Prerequisite: SOC 003 or PSY 417

Students may also consider taking the graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems or Disaster Preparedness or Bioterrorism Preparedness.

Students may transfer in up to ten credits from an accredited graduate program, with the approval of the Graduate Program. These credits may not have been applied to another degree, the grade earned must be a B or better and they must have been taken within the past five years.
